What you get

You get a one-time prize of 10,000 SEK (about 900 EUR) for the best thesis (examensarbete) in process safety. If two people wrote the thesis together, they share the prize. Your thesis is also published on the IPS website, and you present your work at an IPS event in front of members from Swedish industry, consultancies, authorities and universities. IPS is a non-profit association that promotes education and research in process safety. It gives this award once a year.

Who can apply

• Someone must nominate you: you cannot nominate yourself. Only your examiner, supervisor or a teacher at a Swedish university, or a member of the IPS programme committee or board, can put your thesis forward.
• Where you studied: you wrote your thesis at a Swedish university.
• Size of the thesis: it counts for at least 20 higher education credits (högskolepoäng) and is independent work.
• Topic: your thesis is about process safety and is relevant to the process industry.
• Timing: your thesis was examined during the previous year or the current year. Each thesis can win only once.
• Nationality: any nationality can apply, as long as you studied at a Swedish university.

How to apply

You do not apply yourself. Someone nominates you by email to IPS between 1 October of the previous year and 30 September of the current year. The nomination includes the full thesis (or a link) and a short reason why it should win. The IPS programme committee proposes a winner in autumn, and the IPS board makes the final decision.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is narrow: it only covers process-safety theses done at Swedish universities, and it is judged mainly on how useful the results are for the process industry. So the field of candidates is small. The award is not always given out. In years like 2021 and 2025 no thesis met the criteria, which shows the bar is real. If your work clearly fits the topic and a teacher is willing to nominate it, your prospects are good.
