Wenner-Gren travel grant

You get a tax-free grant for a short trip abroad. It covers your travel and accommodation when you take active part in an international conference, symposium, workshop or course. There is no fixed sum. The amount is based on the costs you list in your application. The grant funds only short event trips, not research stays abroad, and it does not cover administrative overhead. It is paid by the Wenner-Gren Foundations, a scientific foundation based in Stockholm.

Who can apply

• Level: You have a doctorate (PhD) awarded no more than 7 years before the deadline.
• Where you work: You are a researcher active in Sweden. Foreign researchers can apply too if they have lived in Sweden for more than 1 year by the deadline.
• Field of study: Any research field.
• Purpose: You attend an international conference, symposium, workshop or course abroad and take an active part, for example with a talk or a poster.
• Trip rule: Your trip must start and end in Sweden.

How to apply

You apply online through the Wenner-Gren application portal, which opens 2 months before each deadline. There are two rounds a year. The 10 March round covers trips from 1 July of the current year to 30 June of the next. The 1 October round covers trips from 1 January to 31 December of the next year. Both close at 23:59. You can write in Swedish or English, and you usually hear back about two months after the deadline.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is cut narrowly. You need a recent doctorate, a research base in Sweden, and a concrete active role at a specific event, so the eligible group is small. If you clearly meet those conditions and can explain why the trip matters for your research, your prospects are good. Apply in the round that fits your travel dates, since the grant is tied to the exact trip and period you name.
