January Wilsgaard scholarship

You will receive a one-off award of approximately 20,000 SEK (around 1,750 EUR) for outstanding achievements in the field of industrial design. The prize is named after Jan Wilsgaard, Volvo’s chief designer from 1950 to 1990. He completed his training at the Gothenburg School, which later became the HDK-Valand Academy of Art and Design. The prize is awarded once a year to a person associated with the industrial design course at this school in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You are affiliated with the Industrial Design degree programme at HDK-Valand in Gothenburg, either as a final-year student or as a lecturer there.
• Field of study: Industrial design only. Other areas of art and design are not permitted.
• Nationality: Applicants of any nationality are welcome to apply. What matters is your place at the school, not your background.

How to apply

There is neither an application form nor a deadline for applications. The school selects the winner itself and announces the result; you cannot therefore apply yourself.

How realistic are your chances?

The university selects one winner each year, so you cannot apply directly. What you can influence, however, is your work. If you’re in your final year of the Industrial Design degree programme at HDK-Valand and your projects stand out, you’ll be among the small group of candidates from which the selection committee makes its decision. Focus on producing compelling work and make sure it catches the eye.
