What you get

For outstanding academic achievement in your degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Birmingham, you will receive a one-off cash prize of up to about 230 EUR (up to 200 GBP). The School of Chemical Engineering awards these prizes annually, one per achievement. This is not a monthly scholarship. The various prizes relate to different years of study. For example, the P. J. Garner Prize (approx. 60 EUR / 50 GBP) is awarded to the best student in their first or second year of study. The Nash Prize (approx. 115 EUR / 100 GBP) recognises a second-year student who has also excelled in sport or student life. The Sir John Cadman Prizes (each worth approximately 230 EUR / 200 GBP) are awarded to the top BEng and MEng students in their final year.

Who can apply

• Subject: You study Chemical Engineering.
• University: You’re studying at the University of Birmingham.
• Year of study: There are prizes for the first, second and final years of study, so students in every year of study can be eligible.
• Grades: You have achieved the highest marks in your chemical engineering modules and passed all the required core subjects. An award also recognises your commitment to sport, student life or society at large.
• Nationality: Open to students of all nationalities.

How to apply

No application is required. The award will be granted to you automatically on the basis of your examination results.

How realistic are your chances?

Each prize is awarded to just one top student per year group, so you need to be the best in your year – it is not enough simply to meet the criteria. You cannot apply for it or campaign for it. The only deciding factor is your marks. If you’re already at the top of your year on the Chemical Engineering degree programme at Birmingham, or close to it, you’re in the running.
