Theology Gibbs Prize (University of Oxford)

For the best overall performance at the ‘Honour School of Theology and Religion’, you will receive a one-off cash prize of about 890 EUR (£760). This marks the final examination phase of the Bachelor’s degree programme in this subject at the University of Oxford. The University of Oxford funds the prize from a donation by Charles D. D. Gibbs. In addition, there are other, smaller Gibbs prizes: approximately 445 EUR (£380) for the best theological or philosophical papers at the Joint Faculty of Philosophy and Theology, and approximately 270 EUR (£230) for the best theological dissertation.

Who can apply

• University: You’re studying at the University of Oxford.
• Study phase: You are currently in the final stage of your Bachelor’s degree (the ‘Honour School’).
• Field of study: Theology and religion, or the theological and philosophical subjects taught at the joint Faculty of Philosophy and Theology.
• Results: You are the top graduate, based on your performance in coursework and public examinations. In a year when there are no candidates of a sufficiently high standard, the examiners may decide not to award this honour.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, provided they are studying at Oxford.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is presented to a single outstanding student in a subject at the University of Oxford, meaning that each year it is awarded only to the very best students in Theology and Religious Studies. It is not possible to apply for it directly or to improve one’s chances; the award is based on examination results. Think of it as recognition of outstanding achievement rather than something one should actively strive for.
