About this award / prize

The IMA Prize

You will receive a one-off award of approximately 614 EUR if you graduate as the top MSci Mathematics graduate at the University of Birmingham. This recognises your overall achievement throughout your degree programme. The award is presented by the University of Birmingham’s School of Mathematics in conjunction with the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA), a UK professional body for mathematicians. You will receive it at the graduation ceremony, which usually takes place in July.

Who can apply

  • Degree: You are completing the ‘MSci Mathematics’ programme, the four-year integrated Master’s programme in Birmingham.
  • University: You’re studying at the University of Birmingham.
  • Field of study: Mathematics.
  • Grades: You are the graduate of the ‘MSci Mathematics’ degree programme with the best results of the year.
  • Nationality: All nationalities welcome.

How to apply

There is no separate application process. The Faculty of Mathematics selects the winner internally on the basis of their final marks and announces the result at the graduation reception.

How realistic are your chances?

Only one student is awarded the prize each year: the top graduate of the MSc in Mathematics programme. You cannot apply for it; instead, you must earn the prize through outstanding academic achievement. If you’re aiming for the top marks in your year group, you’re in the running. Otherwise, just focus on your studies.
