Thomas Witherden Batt Scholarship (UCL)

You will receive about 11,700 EUR (10,000 GBP) for one year of a full-time Master’s degree (MSc) at University College London (UCL). This amount will initially cover your tuition fees. The remaining amount will be paid out in three equal instalments throughout the year to help with your living costs. If your programme is a part-time course or a two-year full-time MSc, the funding will be divided equally between the two years. Four of these scholarships are available for 2026/27. UCL awards this funding to support individuals who would otherwise be unable to afford a full-time Master’s programme.

Who can apply

• Degree: You have applied for a full-time MSc programme at UCL for 2026/27. A fully completed application is sufficient; you do not need an offer of admission at this stage.
• Field of study: Any master’s degree programme is eligible.
• Fresh start: The Master’s programme must be completed independently. It is not possible to transfer credit points from previous degree programmes towards it.
• Residence: You are normally resident in the United Kingdom and are eligible for the home tuition fee rate.
• Financial need: You are unable to finance your master’s degree entirely yourself. This is the most important selection criterion.
• Prior degrees: Even if you already hold a master’s or doctoral degree, you are welcome to apply. However, priority will be given to applicants who do not yet hold a master’s degree.

How to apply

Applications are made via UCL’s ‘Master’s Funding Awards’ programme, a single online form that allows you to apply for several scholarships at the same time. Your application for admission must already have been submitted in full and your references must have been checked. The application deadline is Thursday, 25 June 2026, at 5 BST. Successful applicants will be notified in late July or early August.

How realistic are your chances?

With just four scholarships available across the whole of UCL, competition is fierce, but the eligibility criteria are strict. You must be resident in the United Kingdom and have ‘Home fee’ status, be starting a standalone MSc programme, and demonstrate genuine financial need. If you clearly meet these conditions and can demonstrate a genuine need, your chances are good. Applicants who do not yet hold a master’s degree will be given priority.
