About this scholarship
Bristol Cathedral Choral Scholarship
You will receive an annual payment which increases with every year you sing in the choir: approximately 3,095 EUR (£2,685) in the first year, approximately 3,740 euros (£3,226) in the second year and approximately 4,370 euros (£3,768) in the third year. The funding is available for a period of up to 3 years. It is renewed each year, provided your studies and your choir commitments are going well. You will also receive additional fees for recordings, concerts and television or radio appearances with the choir. In return, you will sing at four church services per week: one weekday service on Monday, and one each on Saturday and Sunday. You will also attend rehearsals when asked to do so. The University of Bristol and Bristol Cathedral award the scholarship, with up to four scholarship holders singing in the choir at any one time.
Who can apply
- Study level: You are a Bachelor’s student at the University of Bristol.
- Field of study: Any subject. You don’t necessarily have to take music.
- Voice: You sing alto, tenor or bass.
- Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
- Timetable: Your timetable allows you time for the four weekly church services and rehearsals.
How to apply
Apply as soon as your place at the University of Bristol has been confirmed via UCAS. You will then sit an audition: two contrasting, prepared pieces, as well as sight-singing and aural tests. This is followed by an interview with the Canon and the Director of Music, who may initially shortlist the applicants.
How realistic are your chances?
The selection criteria for this award are strict: you must already have secured a place at Bristol University, be an alto, tenor or bass, and pass a live audition. As a result, only a handful of confident singers apply for up to four places. If you can sing well and are able to commit to four church services a week, your chances are good. A powerful, reliable singing voice counts for more than your degree subject.
