Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol Main Scholarship

You will receive £1,000 per year (about 1,170 EUR) for up to 3 years, making a total of up to £3,000 (approximately 3,500 EUR). This money is a grant, not a loan, so you will never have to pay it back. It comes from the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol, the national body for Welsh-language higher education, which supports students who undertake the majority of their studies in Welsh. Only a limited number of these grants are awarded, and no more than four grants will be awarded per department at any one university.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You’re studying at a university in Wales, for example at the University of South Wales.
• Level: You are a student on a Bachelor’s degree programme.
• Welsh-medium study: You will complete at least 66% of your degree programme (80 credits per year) in Welsh.
• Course: Your degree programme must appear on the Coleg’s list of recognised degree programmes. At the University of South Wales, only the BA (Hons) degree programme ‘Initial Primary Teacher Education with QTS’, taught in Welsh, is currently recognised.
• Field of study: Applications may be made for any subject, provided that the course is taught in Welsh and features on the list of eligible subjects.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

Applications are made online using the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol form, and your university puts forward candidates. To start your degree in September 2027, you must apply by 20 January 2027. Late applications will not be considered. At some universities, the selection process also includes an entrance examination or a portfolio assessment with an interview.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding is very specific: you must undertake the majority of your studies in Welsh, and at some universities there is only one degree programme that qualifies. As a result, the target group is small and there are few applicants. If you clearly meet the requirement to study in Welsh and are enrolled on one of the listed degree programmes, your chances are good. Apply early, as there are only a limited number of scholarships available.
