University of East Anglia - North Walsham Vikings Scholarship

Benefit

You will receive at least £500 (about 580 EUR) to cover your living costs for one academic year. The amount may increase to up to £1,500 (approximately 1,750 EUR), depending on how many students receive funding and how well you play. As this is a living allowance, it covers your day-to-day expenses but not your tuition fees. The funding comes from the University of East Anglia (UEA) in Norwich, but a local rugby club decides who receives it and how much. The grant is valid for one year, so you will need to reapply for each subsequent year.

Eligibility

• Sport: You are ready and able to play rugby for the ‘North Walsham Vikings’ club. You may also be asked to play for the UEA in the national university league (BUCS).
• University: You’re studying at the UEA in Norwich.
• Level: You are a Bachelor’s or Master’s student.
• Field of study: Any subject.
• Nationality: Anyone can apply, including students from the UK and abroad.
• Other funding: This scholarship can be combined with the UEA Sports Team Scholarship.

How to apply

Complete the UEA online application form and attach evidence of your rugby ability. Applications are accepted throughout the year, but forms received before the start of the academic year in September will be given priority. You should therefore apply early. The decision on who receives the scholarship is made by the club, not the university.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is awarded to only a very small number of applicants. You have to commit to playing for a specific rugby club whilst studying at UEA, which is why hardly anyone applies for it. If you’re a talented rugby player attending UEA and can demonstrate your skills, your chances are good. It’s advantageous to apply before September, as applications submitted early are forwarded directly to the club, which decides who receives the scholarship.
