What the Theodora Bosanquet Bursary gives you

You will receive free basic student accommodation in London for up to 4 weeks at some point between mid-June and mid-September. This will provide you with accommodation whilst you carry out short-term research in the capital, for example if you are working in an archive during the summer. Two of these scholarships are awarded each year by ‘Funds for Women Graduates’ (FfWG), a British educational foundation affiliated with the ‘British Federation of Women Graduates’. Please note that this is not a cash grant: you will only be provided with accommodation, but no money towards living costs, fees or travel expenses.

Who can apply

• Gender: You are a woman (you must be legally recognised as a woman).
• Level: You are a PhD student. This means that you already hold a university degree and are now studying or conducting research with a view to obtaining a higher academic qualification.
• Field of study: Your field of research is history or English literature. Applicants from other disciplines are not eligible to apply.
• Why London: You need to spend a short time in London this summer for your research, for example to carry out archival research.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, whether from the UK or abroad.
• Age: All ages, with no upper age limit.

How to apply

Please email FfWG to request the application form. In your email, please state your qualifications, your research topic, the reasons for your scholarship application and the contact details of two referees. The application deadline is 31 October of the year prior to your stay, and the results will be announced the following February.

How realistic are your chances?

The eligibility criteria are narrow: applications are open exclusively to female PhD students specialising in History or English Literature who require a summer placement in London; the target group is therefore small. However, as only two scholarships are awarded each year, the chances of success are correspondingly low. If you clearly meet the subject requirements, you should set out your reasons for a stay in London in a specific and convincing manner in order to stand out from the other applicants.
