University of Sheffield Bursary

You will receive up to £1,250 per year (about 1,450 EUR) from the University of Sheffield, and you do not need to repay this amount. It is paid on top of your state student finance for each year of your studies. A year spent studying abroad counts towards this, but a year spent on a work placement or in industry does not. How much you receive depends on your household income: £1,000 per year if your household income is £25,000 or less, £500 if it is between £25,001 and £30,000,, and £250 if it is between £30,001 and £40,000. In addition, you may be eligible for an extra £250 per year in one of two circumstances. Firstly, if your household income is £25,000 or less and you live in one of the most deprived regions in the country. Secondly, if you live in the Sheffield City Region in an area where few people go to university, and you have achieved grades of ABB or better at A-level (in this second case, your income does not matter). You can only apply for one of these two additional grants, so the maximum amount you can receive is £1,250. The money is paid out in two instalments each year, the first in October or November.

Who can apply

• University: You are enrolled on a full-time Bachelor’s degree programme at the University of Sheffield, which entitles you to state student finance.
• Fee status: You pay the tuition fees for UK students, not those for international students.
• Student finance: You have applied to Student Finance England (or the relevant regional office) for a loan to cover your tuition fees, as well as an income-based living costs loan (the amount of which depends on your household income). If you do not wish to take out a loan, you can apply for a £0 loan and still have your household income assessed.
• Financial need: Your household income is £40,000 or less for the means-tested part of the benefit.
• Field of study: Open to all subjects.
• Second degrees: If this is your second degree, you may not be eligible for it, as you may not qualify for the student loans to which the scholarship is linked.

How to apply

You do not need to submit a separate application. The university will automatically check your eligibility based on the income details you provided to Student Finance England and your UCAS details. This check takes place in October, and by the end of October you will receive an email confirming whether you are eligible and setting out your payment details.

How realistic are your chances?

There is no upper limit on the number of students who can receive this grant, so it is not a competitive process. If your household income and your course meet the criteria, you will receive the grant automatically. As there is no application form, the most important thing is that Student Finance England has calculated your household income correctly. If you meet the income threshold, you’re eligible.
