The Napier Miles Book Prize

For the best academic performance in your second year of study, you will receive a one-off book prize from the Department of Music at the University of Bristol. The exact value is not disclosed. The name suggests a book voucher or a similar non-cash prize, rather than a monthly scholarship. The prize is named after Philip Napier Miles (1865–1935), a composer and patron of the arts from Bristol.

Who can apply

• University: You’re studying at the University of Bristol.
• Field of study: You are studying music, either as a single-subject degree (music only) or as a combined degree (music combined with another subject).
• Study year: You’re in your second year.
• Grades: You have achieved the best overall results of the year, for example, the highest average mark in your second year.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

No application is required. The faculty awards the prize automatically on the basis of your examination results in the second year of your degree.

How realistic are your chances?

This prize is awarded to the best second-year music students, so you cannot apply for it. The only criterion is your marks throughout the year. If you are among the very best in your year group, you may well receive it. Otherwise, you don’t need to do anything else.
