About this scholarship
Talented Athlete Award (University of Leicester)
You will receive a grant of financial contribution of up to about 580 EUR (GBP 500) for one academic year to cover agreed expenses such as travel costs, equipment, specialist coaching or nutritional advice. You will also receive benefits in kind: a free annual Gold membership for the university’s sports facilities, membership of the ‘Team Leicester’ club, a limited physiotherapy package at the Jo Williams Clinic, and an equipment pack (rucksack, training T-shirt and a tracksuit top or softshell jacket). If it suits your needs, you can also arrange a personalised fitness programme and life skills coaching. This support is provided by the University of Leicester and its ‘Sport and Active Life’ department. It is designed to support you as an athlete and does not cover tuition fees.
Who can apply
- Where you study: You are already studying at the University of Leicester or have been offered a place for the 2026/27 academic year.
- Level and subject: Every degree programme – whether a Bachelor’s or a Master’s – in every department.
- Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
- Sporting level: You are a recognised, talented athlete in your sport and show promise for the future.
- Recent competition: Over the last 12 months, you have played for an international or national team, or taken part in a development programme for young athletes or a programme run by a national sports association.
- Commitment: You are ready to represent the university in British University and College Sport (BUCS) competitions and to join the relevant students’ sports society. Athletes who compete for Team Leicester in a BUCS sport will be given priority.
- Existing funding: If you are already receiving APA funding through your national umbrella organisation, the university may decide not to award a financial grant.
How to apply
Applications must be submitted via an online form. The application period for 2026/27 runs from 10 August to 6 September 2026. A panel of judges will decide on a case-by-case basis, and the number of grants is limited.
How realistic are your chances?
Every year, far more athletes apply than there are scholarships available, so competition is fierce, even if you are very good. Meeting the criteria does not guarantee that you will be awarded a scholarship. The key factors are verifiable national or international competition results from the last 12 months, as well as a clear commitment to competing for Team Leicester in a BUCS sport. If this applies to you, apply within the short window from August to September.
