About this scholarship

What the Robin Saunders bursary gives you

You will receive a scholarship (a non-repayable grant) of about 1,150 EUR per year (£1,000) to cover your living costs whilst studying geology at University of Southampton. The grant runs for 12 months. It is funded by a memorial fund set up by the family of Robin Saunders, a former senior technician at the University’s Geological Institute, which is now part of the Department of Ocean and Earth Sciences at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton.

Who can apply

  • University: You’re studying at the University of Southampton.
  • Field of study: You’re studying geology. Other subjects are out of the question.
  • Financial need: You need help with your living costs.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
  • Where you study: You’re studying in Southampton, UK, and aren’t abroad on an international work placement.

How to apply

There is no open application process. The Head of the Department of Marine and Earth Sciences recommends who should receive the scholarship. The department selects students facing financial hardship, so you do not need to submit a form. Please ensure that the department is aware of your financial situation.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is very restricted in scope. It is awarded exclusively to geology students at Southampton who are in genuine financial need, so the pool of eligible applicants is small. As there is no open selection process, the decision rests with the department. If you clearly meet the criteria regarding your field of study and financial need, your chances are good.
