The Cameron Gifford Scholarship

In the first year of your medical degree as part of the ‘Graduate Entry’ programme at the University of Nottingham, you will receive a one-off payment of approximately 590 EUR (£500). The exact amount may vary slightly depending on tax and ‘Gift Aid’ regulations. This grant is awarded by the University of Nottingham and is intended to support students who require financial assistance when entering the medical degree programme via the ‘Graduate Entry’ route.

Who can apply

• Course: You will begin the first year of the full-time ‘Graduate Entry Medicine’ programme (A101) at the university’s UK campus.
• Financial need: You are receiving the income-contingent portion of your student loan to cover living costs and have applied for the maximum amount to which you are entitled.
• Residence: You have ‘home’ fee status, which means that you lived in the UK during the three years prior to the start of your studies. Refugees with recognised status and European migrant workers are also eligible.
• Your school: You completed your secondary education at a state-funded school in the UK.
• North East priority: Applicants who have attended a state-funded school in the North-East of England (Durham, Northumberland, Teesside, Tyneside or Wearside) will be given preference; however, this is an advantage rather than a requirement.
• Mature students: Applicants aged 25 years or older will also be given preferential consideration.

How to apply

Please complete an online form and attach a covering letter. In this letter, please describe any additional responsibilities, voluntary work or difficulties you have faced. The application deadline is 3 November. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview at the School of Graduate Entry Medicine and Health. Invitations will be sent by email within two weeks of the application deadline.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding is very narrowly targeted. It is aimed exclusively at first-year students on the ‘Graduate Entry Medicine’ programme in Nottingham who are receiving an income-contingent loan and who attended a state-funded school; consequently, the eligible group is small. If, in addition, you are from the North-East of England or are 25 years of age or older, you will meet the priority criteria and have a good chance of success. Please note that, under the scholarship schemes for entry into medical school following a degree, you will generally only be awarded one grant.
