What the John Lennon Memorial Scholarship gives you

You will receive financial support for your postgraduate studies at University of Liverpool, in one of two forms. For a Master’s programme with taught modules or an MRes, you will receive a one-off grant towards your tuition fees of up to approximately 5,200 (£4,500) euros for the 2026/27 year. For a research programme (PhD), you will receive up to approximately 14,000 (£12,000) euros per year as a grant towards tuition fees and living costs for up to 3 years. You must demonstrate progress each year and re-enrol. Part-time PhD students receive the same total amount, spread over 5 years. The scholarship is funded by a trust fund established by John Lennon’s family for the university in the year 1991.

Who can apply

• Level: You are currently on a postgraduate programme or would like to start one. Please select a programme: a Master’s programme with a taught component/MRes or a research programme (PhD).
• Offer: You have accepted a place at the University of Liverpool. This may still be a conditional offer.
• Field of study: All degree programmes taught at the university’s main campus. Students at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine are not eligible to apply.
• Where you are from: You are a student from the UK. International students are not eligible to apply.
• Merseyside link: You were born in Merseyside or have close family or local ties there. Priority will be given to those whose permanent residence is in Merseyside. You will not be considered unless you have a genuine regional connection.
• Financial need and grades: You can provide evidence of both financial need and good grades. Both are taken into account.
• Your interests: You may show an active interest in global, social or environmental issues.

How to apply

Please complete the official application form and email it to the Scholarships Sub-Committee. The deadline for applications is Monday, 6 April 2026, at 17:00. Late applications will not be considered. Due to the high number of applicants, you may not receive confirmation. If you have not received a reply by 31 July, you may enquire.

How realistic are your chances?

The restriction to Merseyside significantly limits the pool of applicants; consequently, this is not an open scholarship, and the group of eligible candidates is small. If you were born in Merseyside or have a clear connection to the region, are studying in Liverpool and can demonstrate both good academic results and a genuine financial need, your prospects are good. As the committee receives a large number of applications, a well-reasoned application and a clear link to global, social or environmental issues will help you stand out from the crowd.
