University of Wales Trinity St David - Welsh Medium/Bilingual Scholarship

What you get

You will receive £50 (about 60 EUR) for every 10 credits if you study in Welsh, up to approximately £600 (around 690 EUR) per year. The amount is paid as a one-off lump sum. The University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) awards this grant to students who undertake their studies wholly or partly in Welsh or in a bilingual programme. The money is paid out in July following the final examinations, so that it is available at the end of the academic year rather than in advance.

Who can apply

• University: You are enrolled as a Bachelor’s student at UWTSD for the current academic year.
• Language of study: You are studying entirely or partly in Welsh or in a bilingual programme. Each module that you wish to have recognised must be taught in Welsh for at least 50%.
• Credits: You must earn at least 40 credits in the year you apply.
• Fees: You pay your tuition fees directly to UWTSD.
• Field of study: All participants are eligible to take part.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, provided they are studying at UWTSD in Wales.
• Other funding: If you are already receiving a scholarship from the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol, you are not eligible for the first £500 of this scholarship. You may, however, apply for the remainder, provided you earn more than 100 credits this year.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted via the Hwb app (hwb.uwtsd.ac.uk) by 6 December. There will be no interview. The amount awarded depends on how many credits you earn in Welsh-medium or bilingual subjects.

How realistic are your chances?

This is not a competition, but an award based on specific criteria. If you are enrolled at UWTSD and achieve the required number of credits in Welsh or in bilingual courses, you are eligible. As the award is linked to a specific university and to studying in the Welsh language, the number of eligible students is small. Anyone who clearly meets the criteria and applies by the deadline should receive the grant. The amount is determined solely by how many credit points you earn in Welsh.
