About this scholarship

USW Welsh-medium Scholarship

You will receive a one-off payment of about 290 EUR (£250) for one academic year if you complete at least 5 credits of your degree programme in Welsh. The University of South Wales pays this amount as a reward for completing part of your degree in Welsh. You will receive the money in May, once staff have confirmed that you have completed these 5 credits in Welsh. You can reapply each academic year. The grant is not automatically renewed.

Who can apply

  • University: You are studying at the University of South Wales, either full-time or part-time. Partner universities that meet the Welsh language requirements are also taken into account.
  • Study level: Bachelor’s or Master’s degrees with distinction, levels 4 to 7.
  • Field of study: Any subject.
  • Welsh study: Each year, you must take at least 5 credits of your degree subjects in Welsh.
  • Language: You speak Welsh as your first or second language and are completing the application in Welsh.
  • Nationality: You are a UK home student.

How to apply

Please complete the online application form in Welsh and submit it by 2 November. A panel of university staff will assess each application. They will evaluate your enthusiasm for your degree subject, for studying in Welsh and at the USW, as well as the quality of your written Welsh. You will be notified of the result within a few days of the application deadline.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding is very specific: you must be studying at a particular university and complete part of your degree in Welsh, meaning that only a small number of students meet the criteria. It involves a selection process in which applications are assessed on the basis of a written statement of purpose; therefore, a well-reasoned application written in good Welsh is crucial. If you clearly meet the criteria and present a convincing case in your application, your chances are good.
