University of Birmingham - The Allied Maples Prize in Industrial Mathematics

You will receive a one-off cash prize of about 614 EUR (approximately £500). The prize will be awarded on a one-off basis during the Faculty of Mathematics’ graduation ceremony. The prize recognises outstanding achievements in mathematics with industrial or commercial applications – that is, mathematics used to solve real-world economic or technical problems. It is funded by the furniture company Allied Maples Ltd and awarded by the University of Birmingham. In 2023, it was awarded to the best group project in the second year of the Mathematics degree programme and was shared amongst seven students.

Eligibility

• University: You are studying at the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Birmingham.
• Level: You are a Bachelor’s student. The prize was awarded to an outstanding group project by second-year students; in previous years, it had been awarded to third- and fourth-year students.
• Subject: Your work stands out in the field of mathematics applicable to industry and commerce.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, provided they are enrolled on the Mathematics degree programme in Birmingham.

How to apply

There is no application process. The Faculty of Mathematics selects the winner internally on the basis of their project or academic achievements. The prize is presented at the annual graduation reception.

How realistic are your chances?

As this is an internal award for outstanding achievement, you cannot apply for it directly. It is awarded each year to a very small number of mathematics students at the University of Birmingham whose work in the field of applied or industrial mathematics stands out significantly from that of their peers. If you are studying this degree programme, you can only qualify for the award through outstanding project work.
