The Andrew King Prize

For outstanding achievements in the field of applied mathematics, you will receive a one-off cash prize of approximately 614 EUR. The Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Birmingham awards this prize once a year, and the winner will be announced at the graduation ceremony in July. Applied mathematics involves using mathematics to model and solve real-world problems – as opposed to pure mathematics (theory) or statistics.

Who can apply

• University: You’re studying mathematics at the University of Birmingham.
• Level: You are a Bachelor’s student in your 3 or 4 year of study.
• Field: Only the modules you have completed in the subject of Applied Mathematics will be taken into account for the awarding of the prize.
• Results: You have achieved excellent marks in these Applied Mathematics modules.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

No application is required. The faculty will select the winner internally, based on your marks in the Applied Mathematics modules in academic years 3 and 4.

How realistic are your chances?

Only one student is awarded the prize each year, namely the one who achieves the best results in Applied Mathematics amongst third- and fourth-year mathematics students at Birmingham. It is not possible to apply for or campaign for the prize – the only criteria are therefore academic results. Those who consistently rank among the very best in their Applied Mathematics modules stand a chance; otherwise, the prize is out of reach.
