About this scholarship

What the IMechE Undergraduate Scholarships give you

You will receive approximately 2,300 EUR per year (2,000 GBP) for a mechanical engineering degree in the UK. The funding is paid for up to four years, amounting to a total of up to approximately 9,200 EUR (8,000 GBP). Years spent on industrial placements do not count towards the funding period. The funding is renewed each year, provided you make sufficient academic progress. The funding is provided by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), the UK’s professional body for mechanical engineers. Some funding schemes are linked to specific subject areas: the ‘Spencer Wilks’ scheme, for example, supports degree programmes in the field of automotive engineering.

Who can apply

  • Degree: You are either just starting a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (BEng or MEng) or are in your first few years of study.
  • University: Your degree programme must be accredited by the IMechE, which means that the institution officially recognises it.
  • Residence: You live in the UK.
  • Field of study: Mechanical engineering. Some specialisms focus on a particular field, such as automotive engineering.
  • Grades: Based on your first-year results, you are well on your way to achieving a result of 2:1 or better.
  • Membership: You are an associate member of the IMechE for the first year’s awards.

How to apply

Please send your completed application form and a reference request form to the IMechE Awards Office by 30 June. For the first-year student awards, shortlisted candidates will be notified in mid-August and will then be invited to an interview. You must attend the interview to be considered for the award.

How realistic are your chances?

The eligibility criteria are fairly strict: you must be resident in the United Kingdom and be studying a degree programme in mechanical engineering accredited by the IMechE. As a result, the pool of applicants is smaller than for open scholarships. Your written answers on the application form are the most important selection criterion; therefore, a specific, well-reasoned explanation is preferable to a general one. If you clearly meet the requirements and apply well in advance of the deadline, your chances are good.
