IET Power Academy Scholarship

You will receive approximately 3,500 EUR per year of study for the duration of your participation in the programme. In addition to this financial support, you will be offered a paid summer placement with a partner company, a personal mentor from industry (an experienced engineer who will support you), and a place at an annual seminar on topics relating to the energy sector. The scholarships are awarded by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) in collaboration with UK companies in the energy, rail and aerospace sectors. Up to 50 scholarships are awarded each year.

Who can apply

• Degree: You are studying for an IET-accredited MEng or BEng degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics or Energy Engineering.
• University: You are enrolled at one of the partner universities, such as Bath, Cardiff, Imperial College London, Manchester, Southampton or Strathclyde.
• Study year: You are in your first, second, third or fourth year of study. Students in their final year are not eligible to apply.
• Grades: You are well on your way to graduating with a grade of 2. First-year students are assessed on the basis of their school grades.
• Right to work: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, although you must hold a work permit for the UK during the summer placements. Some companies (such as BAE Systems Submarines) only recruit British citizens, so it depends on which partner you choose.
• No double funding: You are not currently receiving any other scholarship or grant funded by a company.
• Personal skills: You’re a good communicator, you’re good at planning and problem-solving, and you work well as part of a team.

How to apply

You apply via the IET and list up to three partner companies you are interested in. Each company will review your application and decide whether to invite you to an interview or to an assessment centre. If you are selected, you will receive a formal offer, which you must accept within the specified deadline. The application deadline is in early November.

How realistic are your chances?

Only engineering students at a specified list of British universities who are not yet in their final year of study are eligible to apply, so the pool of applicants is already quite small. With up to 50 scholarships available each year and candidates being selected by the companies on a case-by-case basis, a well-suited applicant with strong grades has a genuine chance of success. Choose companies that accept your nationality and apply early to improve your chances.
