Thomas Witherden Batt Scholarship

You will receive a one-off grant of about 11,500 EUR (GBP 10,000) to cover one year of full-time study on the Master of Science (MSc) programme at University College London (UCL). This amount will initially be used to cover your tuition fees. The remaining amount will be paid out to you in three equal instalments throughout the year to help with your living costs. Four of these scholarships are awarded each year. The fund was established thanks to a donation of 1962 from the Thomas Witherden Batt Foundation and supports students who would otherwise find it difficult to afford a full-time Master’s programme at UCL.

Who can apply

• Degree: You are applying for a self-directed, full-time MSc programme at UCL for the 2026/27 academic year.
• Field of study: Any master’s degree programme is eligible.
• Residence: You are normally resident in the United Kingdom and are entitled to the ‘Home’ tuition fee rate, i.e. the lower tuition fee rate for students resident in the United Kingdom.
• No imported credits: You do not carry over any credit points from previous degree programmes into this one.
• Financial need: It can be shown that money is an obstacle to this course of study. That is the most important factor on which they base their decision.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted via the ‘Masters Funding Awards’ page on the UCL website. The deadline for applications is Thursday, 25 June 2026, at 5 (BST). Successful applicants will be notified in late July or early August.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding is awarded to only a select few. Just four scholarships are awarded each year, and you must be undertaking a full-time master’s degree at a specified university, be eligible for the UK domestic tuition fee rate, and demonstrate financial need. This means that the pool of eligible applicants remains small. The decision depends on how clearly you can demonstrate this financial need. So, if you meet the criteria and document your situation well, your prospects are good.
