Cameron Gifford Scholarship (Graduate Entry Medicine)

You will receive a one-off payment of about 585 EUR (£500), which is paid out during your first year of study. The exact amount may vary slightly depending on tax and Gift Aid arrangements. The University of Nottingham awards this amount to a first-year student on the ‘Graduate Entry Medicine’ (GEM) programme, a four-year medical degree for those who already hold a university degree.

Who can apply

• Course: In the autumn, you will begin the first year of the full-time ‘Graduate Entry Medicine’ programme (A101) at the UK campus in Nottingham.
• Financial need: You are receiving the income-contingent portion of your student loan to cover living costs and have applied for the maximum amount to which you are entitled.
• Residence: Your fee status is ‘home’. This usually means that you have lived in the UK for the three years prior to starting your studies. Refugees with recognised status and certain EU cross-border workers may also be eligible for this status.
• School: You attended a state-funded school in the UK during your secondary school years.
• Regional priority: If you attended a state school in the north-east of England (Durham, Northumberland, Teesside, Tyneside, Wearside), you will be given priority.
• Age priority: If you are 25 or older, you will be given priority.

How to apply

Applications are made via an online form, which also covers the Franks Scholarship. Please include a statement explaining any additional commitments or challenges you face, such as caring for a family member, voluntary work, illness, disability or financial difficulties. The application period for 2025/26 begins on 22 September 2025 and ends on 3 November. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview, and all applicants will be notified of the outcome by email within four weeks of the application deadline.

How realistic are your chances?

Only one scholarship is awarded, so competition is fierce, but the pool of applicants is small. You must be a first-year GEM student who is in genuine financial need and has attended a state school. If you have also attended a school in the North-East of England or are 25 or older, you will fit the preferred profile and your chances will improve. A compelling personal statement that clearly sets out your circumstances is what sets applicants apart from the rest.
