What you get

If you are undertaking a full-time PhD, you will receive your full tuition fees paid as well as an annual living allowance of approximately EUR 24,000 (£20,780 at the 2025/26 rate). The allowance is based on the UKRI rate, the standard rate set by the UK Research Councils. If you are studying part-time, you will receive a pro rata share of this allowance. The funding runs for 3 years. It runs for 4 years if you are undertaking the 4-year PhD programme in Economics with an integrated degree or the 4-year integrated PhD programme at the Business School. The University of Edinburgh awards this scholarship to attract outstanding PhD students to its College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.

Who can apply

• Level: You are currently in the first year of your PhD. Master’s programmes with a research focus (MSc by Research) are not eligible.
• Where you study: You are studying at the University of Edinburgh in one of the following departments: Economics, History, Classics and Archaeology, Health Sciences within the Social Sciences, Literature, Linguistics and Cultural Studies, or Philosophy, Psychology and Linguistics.
• Study mode: Full-time, part-time and distance-learning programmes are all permitted at doctoral level.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, whether from the UK or abroad.
• Field of study: Any subject area within the above-mentioned eligible disciplines (arts, humanities and social sciences).
• Grades: You have excellent grades and show clear potential for research.

How to apply

First, apply for admission to your PhD programme. Then, via MyEd, complete the online scholarship application on the EUCLID portal. If you apply to the School of Economics and are shortlisted, you will be invited to an interview. The other faculties make their decisions solely on the basis of the written application.

How realistic are your chances?

The university points out that this funding scheme attracts a large number of applicants, that competition is very fierce, and that the funding on offer is generous. Only applicants with top marks and a compelling research proposal will be considered. A concise, well-reasoned research proposal is what will set you apart from the rest. Prepare your applications for admission and scholarships well in advance of the deadline, as late applications will never be accepted.
