What Just Happened Fund

You will receive a one-off payment of up to about GBP 253 (approx. 253 EUR) if you, or someone close to you, is suddenly admitted to hospital whilst you are studying at the University of Plymouth. The money covers additional costs incurred in the short term: travel to the hospital, accommodation nearby, and food and drink during your stay. This is a small emergency fund managed by the university. It was set up in 2013 with funds raised by a former student from Plymouth and is topped up by the university. You will receive this one-off payment; it is not a monthly payment.

Who can apply

• University: You are enrolled as a student at the University of Plymouth.
• Your situation: You, a close relative or a friend unexpectedly require hospital treatment due to a serious injury or illness.
• What the money is for: You may incur costs for travel, accommodation or meals in connection with your hospital stay, which will arise at very short notice.
• Field of study: Open to all subjects.
• Nationality: All nationalities can apply.

How to apply

You should apply for support directly to the university’s Student Services Hub, either by telephone or by email. There is no fixed deadline. You can submit your application at any time during the year, as soon as the emergency arises.

How realistic are your chances?

This is a limited emergency fund, not an open scholarship, so only a few people apply, and only those who find themselves in a genuine emergency are eligible. If, as a student in Plymouth, you are suddenly faced with hospital bills for yourself or a family member and contact Student Services immediately, your chances are good. As the amount is limited, you should regard it more as assistance to cover immediate costs rather than a generous grant.
