Thomas Wiedemann Memorial Fund travel grant

You will receive a one-off travel grant of up to about 175 EUR (up to £150) in a 12-month period to fund a research trip to a UK university, library or museum. The grant covers travel costs and may also help to cover accommodation and subsistence costs. Registration fees for online research events may also be covered. If you have a disability or are a carer, you may apply separately for a second grant of the same amount to cover additional costs. The fund is a UK charity established in memory of Thomas Wiedemann, a professor of Latin at the University of Nottingham. It supports PhD students’ research into antiquity.

Who can apply

• Level: You are a PhD student and are enrolled on either a teaching or research programme. Visiting PhD students who are officially enrolled at a UK department may also apply.
• Field of study: Your course focuses on the ancient Greek or Roman world (Classical Philology).
• University: You are studying at a university of your choice in the UK.
• Where you go: The journey must take place within the UK. Travel to other countries is not covered.
• Nationality and age: Open to all nationalities and age groups.
• Purpose: The trip must be related to your current or planned research. Trips to seminars and conferences are particularly welcome.

How to apply

Applications are made via an online form, usually at least one month before your trip. Your supervisor or course tutor must send a brief letter of support to the fund by email. There is no fixed annual application deadline; applications are accepted at any time. You are also expected to ask your own institution to cover part of the costs.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is very narrowly defined: it is aimed exclusively at PhD students in Classical Philology at British universities for research stays within the UK. The pool of eligible applicants is therefore small. The amount of the scholarship is modest, which keeps demand in check, and there is no annual call for applications. If you clearly fall within the subject area, can demonstrate that the trip will further your research, and apply at least one month in advance, your chances are good.
