Gaisford Essay Prize for Greek Language and Literature

You will receive a cash prize of approximately 360 EUR for writing an essay on Greek language and literature. The Faculty of Classical Philology at the University of Oxford awards this prize once a year. The money comes from the Gaisford Fund, which was established in memory of Thomas Gaisford (1779–1855), a former professor of Greek at Oxford, to promote the study of classical subjects.

Who can apply

• University: You’re studying at the University of Oxford.
• Level: You are a Bachelor’s student. Master’s students are not eligible to apply for this prize; however, there is a separate Gaisford Dissertation Prize available for them.
• Subject of the essay: Your essay is about Greek language and literature.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, provided they are enrolled at the University of Oxford.

How realistic are your chances?

This prize is very narrowly defined: only undergraduate students at Oxford whose work focuses on Greek language and literature are eligible to enter, meaning there are very few applicants in the running. If you are already studying Classics at Oxford and can write a compelling essay, your chances are good. As with any prize for a single written piece of work, the quality of your essay will determine the outcome.
