What you get

For the best final results in archaeology and anthropology at the University of Oxford, you will receive a one-off cash prize of up to about 575 EUR (500 GBP). The School of Archaeology awards this prize once a year in three categories:

• Gibbs Prize (about 575 EUR / 500 GBP): for the best overall performance in the final examinations.
• Gibbs Dissertation Prize (about 290 EUR / 250 GBP): for the dissertation with the highest mark.
• Proxime Accessit Prize (about 290 EUR / 250 GBP): for the second-best overall performance.

The prize was established in 2009 following a donation by Charles Day Dowling Gibbs and is one of the best-known awards for students at Oxford.

Who can win

• Degree: You are a Bachelor’s student and are about to complete your degree.
• Field of study: You’re studying archaeology and anthropology.
• University: You’re studying at the University of Oxford.
• Nationality: Anyone, regardless of nationality, can win. There are no restrictions.
• Results: You’ll get the top mark in your year group’s final exams or the top mark for your dissertation.

How it is awarded

No application is required. The school awards the prize automatically at the end of the year, based on your results in the final examinations and coursework. Should the examiners be unable to find a candidate who meets the requirements in a particular year, they may decide not to award the prize.

How realistic are your chances?

You cannot apply for this prize. You win it by achieving the highest marks in your year group at Oxford in the subjects of archaeology and anthropology. The pool of eligible candidates is small, as it is restricted to current students in their final year of study in a relevant subject at a university. However, as only the top result receives the main prize each year, your chances depend entirely on how you perform in your final exams compared to your fellow students.
