About this award / prize

Human Science Gibbs Prize

You get a one-off cash prize of about 662 EUR (£575) for the best performance in the Human Sciences finals at the University of Oxford. Human Sciences is a degree that combines biology, society and culture to study how humans live. Three runner-up awards of about 200 EUR (£175) each go to the next strongest candidates. The prize comes from a gift by Charles D. D. Gibbs and is awarded by the University of Oxford.

Who can apply

  • University: You study at the University of Oxford.
  • Study phase: You are in the final examined stage of your undergraduate degree (your Final Honour School).
  • Subject: You study Human Sciences.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
  • Performance: You produce the best coursework and finals (public exam) results in your year.

How to apply

You do not apply. The prize is awarded automatically based on your coursework and finals results. In a year with no strong enough candidate, the examiners can choose not to award it.

How realistic are your chances?

This is a single top prize for the best Human Sciences student in one Oxford year group, so the field is small but the bar is very high. You cannot campaign for it. It goes to whoever earns the strongest finals results, with three runner-up awards for those just behind. Aim for it by doing outstanding work.
