About this award / prize
Psychology Gibbs Prize (University of Oxford)
You will receive a one-off cash prize for outstanding academic achievement in examinations and coursework within a psychology-related degree programme at the University of Oxford. The amount awarded depends on which prize you win. The main prizes are worth approximately 700 EUR (600 GBP) and are awarded for the best overall performance in Experimental Psychology and in Psychology, Philosophy and Linguistics (PPL). Smaller prizes of approximately 290 EUR (250 GBP) are awarded to the second-best student in each subject. Approximately 175 EUR (150 GBP) is awarded for the best results in the philosophy or linguistics examination papers within the PPL programme. The prizes are funded from the estate of Charles D. D. Gibbs and awarded by the University.
Who can apply
- University: You are studying at the University of Oxford.
- Study level: You are a bachelor’s student and are currently sitting your final exams (the ‘Final Honour School’).
- Field of study: You are studying Experimental Psychology or Psychology, Philosophy and Linguistics (PPL).
- Grades: You achieved the best or second-best results in your year group’s exams and coursework.
- Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
How to apply
You do not need to apply. The prizes are awarded automatically on the basis of your examination and performance results, unless otherwise stated in the course description. In a year in which no student is deemed to have performed well enough, the examiners may decide not to award a prize.
How realistic are your chances?
It’s impossible to plan for. The prize is awarded to the student who achieves the highest mark in their year on a single Oxford degree programme, so only the very best student in each subject wins. There is no application process and no way to improve your chances beyond your examination performance. If you are already a top candidate in Experimental Psychology or PPL, you can win it. For everyone else, it is out of reach.
