University of Oxford - The Oxford Lasers Prize for a MPhys Project in Optical Physics

What you get

The best MPhys research project in the field of optical physics will receive a one-off prize of about 175 EUR (150 GBP). Optical physics involves the study of light and its behaviour, for example lasers and the interaction of light with matter. The prize is awarded by the Department of Physics at the University of Oxford and funded by Oxford Lasers, a UK-based manufacturer of laser systems. It recognises work already carried out and is therefore a one-off award, not an ongoing monthly grant.

Who can apply

• Degree: You are studying for a MPhys (Master of Physics) degree at the University of Oxford.
• What counts: As part of your final-year examinations (the ‘Final Honour School of Physics’), you have completed an outstanding research project in the field of optical physics.
• Field: Physics, in particular optical physics. There are separate prizes for other fields such as astrophysics or particle physics.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply. The only requirement is that you are studying at Oxford.

How to apply

No application is required. Oxford awards the prize automatically based on the quality of your MPhys dissertation, so you do not need to submit anything and there is no deadline.

How realistic are your chances?

Each year, only one prize is awarded for what is by far the best project in the field of optical physics; consequently, the bar is set high and one cannot simply aim for this prize. You earn it through an outstanding final-year dissertation in this field. Focus on the work itself, and recognition will follow naturally if your project stands out.
