The Tessella Prize for software in an MPhys Project

For the best use of software in your MPhys project, you will receive a one-off cash prize of about 175 EUR (150 GBP). The prize is awarded by the Department of Physics at the University of Oxford. The prize money is sponsored by Tessella, a software and analytics consultancy based near Oxford. The prize recognises the most outstanding use of programming and software in a fourth-year research project.

Who can apply

• University: You’re studying physics at the University of Oxford.
• Study phase: You are in the fourth year of the MPhys degree programme and have completed your MPhys research project.
• Field: Physics. This prize recognises the best use of software or programming in your project.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

There is no separate application process. The examiners in the Department of Physics select the winner from among the MPhys projects undertaken in the fourth year of study. The prize is announced at the ‘Final Honour School’ awards ceremony during Trinity Term (the summer term).

How realistic are your chances?

This is a single prize awarded to one student from the entire physics cohort at Oxford; it is therefore not possible to apply for it specifically. The only way to be considered is to develop high-quality, well-documented software as part of your MPhys project and ensure that the examiners take notice of it. Think of the prize as recognition for outstanding work rather than something you should actively strive for.
