MPhil Scholarship in the Humanities and Social Sciences

Whilst studying at St Cross College, University of Oxford, you will receive approximately 5,800 EUR per year (£5,000) for up to two years. The money covers your annual college fees and leaves you with a small amount of pocket money. As one of only two scholarship holders selected each year, you will also be given priority in the first year when it comes to being allocated a room in the college accommodation at the standard rent. The scholarship is funded by St Cross College. It runs for the duration of your tuition fee liability; for example, for the one-year MPhil programme in Law, it applies for one year.

Who can apply

• Degree: You are starting an MPhil programme in a subject within the humanities or social sciences at the University of Oxford, or a BPhil programme in philosophy.
• Field of study: Any subject from the humanities or social sciences is permitted.
• College: You must list St Cross College as your first choice in your application for a Master’s degree at Oxford. The funding applies exclusively to that institution and is non-transferable.
• Nationality: Open to all nationalities, including international students.

How to apply

In addition to your application for a postgraduate programme at Oxford, you must submit a separate scholarship application using the form on the college’s scholarships page. The application deadline is in early March (on 13 March).

How realistic are your chances?

As only two scholarships are awarded each year, competition is fierce, even though the pool of applicants is limited to those commencing postgraduate study at a specific college in Oxford. Your chances will improve if you clearly fit the covered subject areas and list St Cross as your first choice. Meeting Oxford’s entry requirements is the real hurdle, and you must submit your application by the deadline in March.
