About this scholarship

Squire and Marriott Bursaries

You will receive a yearly grant to study theology at University of Oxford. The Faculty of Theology’s Governing Board determines the exact amount each year to cover your tuition fees; therefore, this is not announced in advance. At least two scholarships are awarded in each round, provided that suitable candidates apply. You may take up the scholarship at any college or hall in Oxford. The funding comes from a trust administered by the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Oxford.

Who can apply

  • Career plan: You intend to be ordained as a priest in the Church of England or in a church in full communion with it.
  • Financial need: You need financial support to fund your studies at Oxford.
  • Where you study: You are enrolled at the University of Oxford.
  • Field: You study theology.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
  • Considered after Anglican candidates: Provided that funds are still available, the selection panels may award grants to students at the University of Oxford who are seeking a career in church ministry within churches that have ecumenical links with the Church of England, or to lay people who wish to serve as theologians for their church.

How to apply

You should submit an application, to which you must attach evidence of your academic achievements, documents relating to your financial circumstances and references regarding your personal qualities. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to an interview before a decision is made on the award of the scholarships.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is aimed at a narrowly defined target group: individuals who are preparing for ordination in the Church of England, studying theology in Oxford and in need of financial support. This means the pool of applicants remains small; so if you clearly meet these criteria and can demonstrate your need, your chances are good. Applicants who are not pursuing the path to the Anglican priesthood will only be considered as a secondary option; therefore, the best chances are for those who are following the main route.
