About this grant / loan

What the David Kirby Memorial Fund gives you

You will receive a one-off grant of up to about 585 EUR (£500) to fund a life sciences research project. This is a research grant, not a living allowance. It covers work that you carry out during the holidays – that is, the semester breaks – or as part of your MBiol project in your fourth year of study. It is awarded by the Department of Biology at the University of Oxford (formerly the Department of Zoology).

Who can apply

  • University: You’re studying at the University of Oxford.
  • Field of study: You are studying life sciences or human sciences.
  • What the money is for: You are carrying out a research project, either during the holidays or as part of your MBiol dissertation in your fourth year of study.
  • Supervision: A member of staff at the University of Oxford will supervise your project or work on it alongside you.
  • Nationality: All nationalities can apply.
  • Topic preference: Projects on reproductive biology – that is, research into the reproduction of living organisms – are given priority, although all areas of biology are considered.

How to apply

Please contact the department’s trust fund administrator by email to enquire about the application process. No fixed deadline has been published for this fund.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is awarded to only a very small number of applicants. You must be enrolled as an undergraduate at Oxford in one of two subjects and be undertaking a supervised research project, which means there are only a few applicants competing for it. If you clearly meet these criteria and can present a sound project proposal, particularly in the field of reproductive biology, your chances are good. The scholarship is modest and covers the project costs, so a clear, well-thought-out application is key.
