Gay Clifford Awards for Outstanding Women Students

You will receive about 11,700 EUR (10,000 GBP) for one year of full-time Master’s study at University College London (UCL). The money will first be used to cover your tuition fees. The remaining amount will be paid out to you in three equal instalments throughout the year to help with your living costs. UCL has established this scholarship to enable women to undertake a Master’s degree. It is named after the scholar and poet Gay Clifford (1943–1998). Only two scholarships are awarded each year: one in the Department of Economics and one in the Department of Philosophy. You may also receive other scholarships or grants; however, UCL reserves the right to reduce this scholarship to ensure that your total funding remains balanced.

Who can apply

• Degree level: You have been offered a place on a full-time, on-campus Master’s programme at UCL.
• Field of study: You will undertake your Master’s degree in the Department of Economics or the Department of Philosophy.
• Gender: You identify as female.
• Nationality: Anyone can apply, whether from the UK or abroad.
• Grades: The prize will be awarded to the applicants who achieve the best results on the basis of their academic performance.

How to apply

There is no separate application process. The Departments of Economics and Philosophy select scholarship recipients based on their UCL admission applications. If you would like to be considered for a scholarship, please contact your department directly. Successful applicants will be notified in June or July.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is granted to very few people: each year, only two scholarships are awarded – one in economics and one in philosophy – and these are awarded exclusively to women who have been admitted to these Master’s programmes. Selection is based solely on academic excellence, and as there are only a handful of places available, competition is very fierce. If your grades are outstanding and you are suited to one of the two subject areas, it is worth expressing your interest at an early stage.
