What you get

You will receive an annual living allowance (a regular payment to cover your living costs) of approximately GBP 23,000 (about 26,000 EUR), as well as full coverage of your PhD tuition fees. You will also receive funding for research training and for activities organised by your cohort (joint events with other PhD students in your year group). You will become a member of the Scotland-wide Graduate School of Social Science, a network of social science PhD students at Scottish universities. For a direct PhD programme, the funding lasts for up to 3.5 years, or up to 4.5 years if you first complete a one-year Master’s by Research and then proceed to a PhD. Funding is provided by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC, part of UK Research and Innovation) in partnership with the partner universities.

Eligibility

• Your subject: Her field of research is economic and social history.
• Degree level: You are either starting or continuing a PhD programme in this subject area. Depending on your previous course of study, you may first complete a one-year Master’s programme with a research focus.
• Where you study: You are studying at the University of Edinburgh, and your entire course takes place in the UK. You may only travel abroad for fieldwork, conferences or further training that form part of your research.
• Qualifications: You will normally hold a bachelor’s degree from a recognised UK university or an equivalent international qualification. A ‘First Class’ degree is not required. The selection process takes into account not only your academic results but also your professional and personal experience.
• Nationality: Both UK and international students can apply. Most places are allocated to UK students, meaning there are fewer places available for international applicants.
• Study mode: You cannot apply if you intend to complete your PhD through distance learning.
• Timing: You cannot apply if you are already well advanced in your PhD, for example in the third year of your full-time PhD programme.

How to apply

The application process consists of two stages. First, submit a complete application for a PhD (or Master’s by Research) via the University of Edinburgh’s online portal by 19 November, 23:59 UK time. You must then submit your funding application via the SGSSS Apply system by 24 November at 17:00 UK time. Before applying, please contact the Head of the Department of History for advice on which route is best suited to you.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding is for a specific discipline – economic and social history – at a university, so far fewer applicants apply for it than for open scholarships. If your research clearly fits within this discipline and you can demonstrate your potential through both your studies and your other experiences, your prospects are good. It is advisable to get in touch with the head of the department at an early stage and to submit your application well in advance of the deadline.
