Richard Chattaway Scholarship

You will receive a one-off payment of approximately 2,300 EUR (£2,000) for a research degree in History at University College London (UCL). The award is granted by the Department of History at UCL and is presented each year to a postgraduate research student. It is intended to support your work as part of an MPhil or PhD programme. These are research-based programmes in which you carry out your own original research rather than attending lectures.

Who can apply

• Degree: You are currently studying for an MPhil or PhD at UCL, or have applied to do so.
• Field: Her research focuses on the history of modern warfare, particularly from 1870 onwards.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
• Condition: Any publication in which the scholarship is mentioned must include a reference to the scholarship.

How to apply

First, apply for admission to the research degree programme in ‘History’ at UCL. You should then contact the administrative officer for research studies in the Department of History and inform them that you would like to be considered for this scholarship. The application deadline is 15 May; please therefore apply well in advance of the start of your studies.

How realistic are your chances?

This prize is highly coveted. Only one is awarded each year, and your research must be relevant to the topic of ‘Modern Warfare’ as defined by 1870. This keeps the pool of applicants small, meaning that a strong candidate whose PhD topic clearly fits this theme has a genuine chance of winning. However, you must first be accepted onto UCL’s research programme, which is in itself a highly competitive selection process.
