Ayer-Sumitomo Award in Philosophy

You get a one-off payment of about 1,010 EUR (around £800) when you start a philosophy research degree at University College London (UCL). You can put the money towards your tuition fees or use it for living costs. This is a small departmental award from the UCL Department of Philosophy. It is funded by a gift from Sumitomo Corporation in the name of the philosopher A.J. Ayer, and it is given out once a year based on academic merit.

Who can apply

• Degree: You are starting one of UCL's two philosophy research degrees: the MPhil Stud (a two-year full-time research course) or the PhD in Philosophy (three years full-time).
• Field of study: Philosophy only.
• Where you study: University College London, in the United Kingdom.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
• Grades: You need excellent academic results, as the award goes to the strongest candidates.

How to apply

There is no separate application. Everyone accepted onto a UCL philosophy research degree is automatically considered. So you only need to complete the regular UCL admissions application by its deadline.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is narrow: it only goes to people admitted to UCL's philosophy research degrees, which is already a small and selective group. It is awarded automatically on academic merit with no extra form to fill in. Once you are in the running, the only thing you can do is submit a strong application to the programme itself.
