About this scholarship

Carol Chattaway Medieval History Scholarship

You will receive a discount of about 2,900 EUR (£2,500) on your tuition fees for one year. You will not receive any cash. The amount will be applied directly to your outstanding balance with UCL. The Department of History at University College London (UCL) awards this discount once a year to a PhD student specialising in medieval history.

Who can apply

  • Level: You are a postgraduate student at UCL and are either undertaking a taught Master’s programme or a research degree, such as an MPhil or a PhD.
  • Field: Her research focuses on medieval history and is closely linked to the Master’s programme in ‘Medieval and Renaissance Studies’ (MARS).
  • Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, regardless of their fee status.
  • Who is favoured: Older students (or students who do not fit the usual profile) and female applicants will be given special consideration. This is a preference, not a requirement.

How to apply

There is no separate application process. Please submit your complete UCL application, including your references, by 15 May. All eligible applications received by that date will be automatically considered. If you have not received a response by 31 May, you have not been shortlisted.

How realistic are your chances?

Only one scholarship is awarded each year, and it is reserved exclusively for students at UCL who are specialising in medieval history. Although the pool of eligible applicants is small, competition is fierce as only a single scholarship is available. If you clearly meet the ‘Medieval’ specialisation requirement – and particularly if you are an older applicant – your chances are good. Submit your complete application well in advance of 15 May to remain in the running.
