Joseph Hume Scholarship

You will receive a one-off grant of about 1,160 EUR (£1,000) to cover the costs of your research as a PhD student at the Faculty of Law at UCL in London. One scholarship is awarded each year. The Faculty awards it to a student on its MPhil/PhD programme, the research programme leading to a PhD in Law.

Who can apply

• Programme: You are either just starting the MPhil/PhD research programme at UCL’s Faculty of Law or are already enrolled on it.
• Field: Her field of research is law.
• University: You are studying at University College London (UCL) in the United Kingdom.
• Nationality: Applicants of any nationality are welcome to apply, and your contribution status is irrelevant.
• Grades: You have an outstanding academic record and a compelling research proposal.
• Other funding: The faculty will take into account any other funding you already have available.

How to apply

There is no separate application form. Apply for the PhD programme in Law at UCL by 18 November. All applicants who apply by this date will automatically be considered for the scholarship, and the faculty will decide who receives it.

How realistic are your chances?

Only one scholarship is awarded each year, to the best candidates from a top-ranked law faculty – so competition is fierce. Your chances depend on outstanding academic achievement and a compelling research proposal, not on whether you meet specific, narrowly defined admission criteria. If you apply for the PhD programme well in advance of the November deadline, you’ll remain in the running.
