Whitworth Scholarship Awards

You will receive up to £10,000 per year (about 11,600 EUR) for up to 4 years, with the total amount capped at £40,000 (approximately 46,400 EUR). This will fund an engineering degree at any UK university or higher education institution in any engineering discipline (BEng, MEng or MSc). If you are studying part-time or on a work-study programme, the amount will be paid on a pro rata basis (in line with your study load). You may combine this funding with other scholarships. The programme was established in 1868 by Sir Joseph Whitworth and is administered by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Who can apply

• Field of study: You are studying or planning to study engineering in any branch of engineering.
• Practical route: Before you began your degree, you spent at least 2 years in vocational training in engineering after completing your full-time education.
• Stage: You are about to start an engineering degree, are already studying engineering, or have just completed your degree and now wish to go on to do a Master’s degree.
• Nationality: You are a British national, a national of a Commonwealth country or a citizen of the European Union.
• Residence: You lived in the UK for at least 3 consecutive years immediately prior to starting your degree.
• One award only: You can only win the Whitworth Prize once in your lifetime.

How to apply

First, please complete a short suitability questionnaire on the Whitworth Scholarships website. The application deadline is 17 July each year. All shortlisted applicants will be invited to an interview.

How realistic are your chances?

This award has very strict eligibility criteria. In addition to an engineering degree, you must already have several years’ practical professional experience. This rules out most applicants who are straight out of school and narrows down the pool of candidates. If you have this practical background as well as strong academic and practical skills, your chances are good. As this is a one-off, lifetime grant and an interview is compulsory, the jury expects a convincing, well-substantiated case.
