About this scholarship
Cardiff University Entrance Scholarships
You will be awarded a merit-based scholarship from the Faculty of Music at Cardiff University if you are a talented instrumentalist or singer and are commencing an undergraduate degree in music. Each year, the Faculty awards a fixed number of these scholarships to first-year students. The amount of the scholarship is not published; therefore, please check with the Faculty for the current amount before counting on it.
Who can apply
- Degree: You will be starting your first year of a music degree at Cardiff University, such as the ‘BMus’ programme or a related BA degree (e.g. Music and English Literature).
- Musical level: You play an instrument or sing at the 8 level, or can demonstrate in your application that you are working towards this. Level 8 is the highest level in the British graded music examinations.
- Nationality: Anyone can apply, whether you’re from the UK, the EU or another country.
- Basis: Selection is based solely on musical ability. There is no means test.
How to apply
You do not need to submit a separate scholarship application. Anyone applying via UCAS, the central application service for higher education in the United Kingdom, for a music degree programme in Cardiff will automatically be considered. Most applicants will be invited to an open day featuring a 15-minute audition and an interview; this audition also determines the award of scholarships.
How realistic are your chances?
Only applicants for a place on a music course at a specific university compete against one another, and your performance or singing at the audition determines whether you are admitted. If you have already reached level 8 or are close to doing so, and you perform well on the day, your prospects are good, as only a limited number of scholarships are awarded each year. The university now works with smaller groups of students, so places are scarcer than they used to be.
