The Greenwich Bursary (Aspire@Greenwich)

In your first year, you’ll receive about 810 EUR (700 GBP), which will be paid in two instalments of 350 GBP each onto a personalised Aspire card. The card works like a top-up account at the John Smith’s student shop on campus and in the online shop. You can use it to buy textbooks, stationery, tech items and other things you need for your studies. You can also use some of it for student union societies and groups. It is a gift, not a loan: you never have to pay it back and it does not increase your student debt. The money comes from the University of Greenwich and its partner, the JS Group, and is intended for students from low-income households.

Who can apply

• Level: You are a new undergraduate student in your first year of study (year 0 or 1). If you are studying part-time, you must take at least 60 credits.
• Course: You are studying for a BA, BEd, BSc, LLB, BEng, MEng or MMath. Postgraduate programmes, PGCE, pre-registration nursing training and the Medway School of Pharmacy are not eligible.
• Where you study: You are on the Greenwich, Avery Hill or Medway campus, or at a partner university that pays your tuition fees directly to the university.
• Fee status: You pay the tuition fees for home students, which amount to more than 6,165 GBP per year. Students with a scholarship, direct entry or those on a vocational training programme are not eligible to apply.
• Financial need: Your household income is 25,000 GBP or less. The university will verify this using your assessment from Student Finance England, so you must consent to this information being shared with the university.

How to apply

You do not need to submit an application. The university will automatically check your details with Student Finance and set up an Aspire account, provided you meet the eligibility criteria. You will receive an email informing you whether you have been awarded the scholarship. If you have not received a message by the first payment date, you can submit an enquiry by 31 July 2026.

How realistic are your chances?

The award of this scholarship is decided on the basis of facts, not through a selection process. If you meet all the criteria, you will receive it: first-year student, an eligible degree programme, domestic tuition fee status and a household income of less than 25,000 GBP. The income threshold and course restrictions limit the pool of eligible applicants, but there is no comparison with other applicants. Simply ensure that Student Finance England has your household income on file and that you have consented to its disclosure; otherwise, the automated check will not be able to verify your eligibility.
