University of Greenwich - William Hills Scholarship

Benefit

You will receive £5,000 per year (about 5,750 EUR) for all 3 years of your Bachelor’s degree (BEng) in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Greenwich. The amount is paid out in three instalments each year. Once you have successfully completed an academic year, the funding is automatically carried over to the next year, and you will receive additional funding upon completing your 3 academic year. Three students are selected per cycle. The scholarship is funded by the estate of William Hills, who studied Mechanical Engineering at the University in 1948 and wished to support the next generation of engineers. If you fail to pass an academic year, the funding will be withdrawn.

Eligibility

• Course: You have been offered a place on a full-time degree programme in ‘BEng Mechanical Engineering’ (including extended programmes) at the Medway Campus in Kent, starting in September 2027. Online students are not eligible to apply.
• School qualification: You are undertaking a Level 3 qualification for which you will receive UCAS points (A-Levels, BTEC Level 3, T-Levels, Access or IB), and you will receive your final results in the summer of 2027.
• Your school: You are enrolled at one of the University’s partner universities or technical colleges.
• Fee status: You are a new full-time undergraduate student on the Bachelor’s programme in 2027 and pay the maximum tuition fee for domestic students, which is £9,790.
• Timing: You applied via UCAS by the deadline for ‘equal consideration’ on 13 January 2026 and confirmed your place by the UCAS response deadline in June or July 2026.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities may apply, provided they have ‘domestic tuition fee’ status.
• Priority: If there is a high number of applicants, priority will be given to students from regions with low university participation rates (POLAR 4 Q1, IMD Q1) and to women, as women are under-represented in STEM subjects.

You must apply separately using the online form on the university’s scholarship page by 18:00 on Friday, 30 July 2027. Your teacher or careers adviser can help you with your application. The shortlist will be drawn up based on your academic performance.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding scheme is very narrowly defined: just three places, one degree programme, one campus, and you must be from a partner university and pay the tuition fees applicable to home students. This keeps the pool of applicants small. If you clearly meet these criteria – particularly if you come from a region with low participation rates or are a woman embarking on an engineering degree – your chances are good. Apply early and ensure that your university supports your application.
