Lady Gladstone Scholarship

You will receive a one-off payment of about 1,740 EUR (£1,500), which will be paid out at the end of November of your first year of study at Bangor University in Wales. Bangor University awards this grant as part of its scholarship programme for first-year students in memory of Lady Gladstone of Hawarden. Recipients are selected on the basis of an examination in a subject of their choice. No further funding is provided in subsequent years.

Who can apply

• Where you're from: You were born in, or live in, one of the following regions in Wales: Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire or Wrexham Maelor.
• Residency: You live in the United Kingdom or have residence status in the United Kingdom for the purposes of tuition fees.
• University: You are applying to Bangor University and listing it as your first choice via UCAS, the central admissions service for higher education institutions in the United Kingdom.
• Level: You will be starting a bachelor’s degree or a degree programme with a foundation year after completing your 3-level examinations, such as A-levels.
• Field of study: Any Bachelor’s degree subject.
• Nationality: Applicants of any nationality may apply, provided they meet the residency requirements for the UK.
• The exam: You will sit the annual entrance examination for scholarships at your school or university in a subject of your choice from Bangor University’s list.

How to apply

Please complete the application form for the admission scholarships. For the start of studies on 2026, the application period runs from 8 October 2025 to 30 January 2026. You will then sit the exam at your school or college on 11 February 2026; Bangor University will mark it, and you will receive your results in March 2026. You must also apply via UCAS, usually before the deadline on 14 January.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is very narrowly defined. You must have been born in or live in one of four specific Welsh counties and list Bangor as your first-choice university, so the pool of eligible applicants is small. If you meet these criteria, your chances of success will depend mainly on how well you perform in the entrance exam. Please note that the scholarship is not guaranteed every year. You should therefore check that it is being offered before basing your plans on it.
