Northumbria Support Bursary

You will receive about 1,730 EUR per year (1,500 GBP) as a grant towards your living and study costs at Northumbria University in Newcastle upon Tyne. The grant will be paid over a period of up to three years and amounts to a total of approximately 5,200 EUR (4,500 GBP). The amount will be paid directly into your bank account in three instalments per year. You do not need to repay the amount.

Who can apply

• Where you study: From September, you will be enrolling as a full-time student on a Bachelor’s degree programme at Northumbria University’s Newcastle upon Tyne campus.
• Study level: You are a new student starting either the introductory year of an extended degree programme (level 3) or the first year of a degree programme (level 4). Students who are already enrolled and those repeating a year are not eligible to take part.
• Your old school or college: In 2025/26, you studied at one of the six local colleges listed (Middlesbrough College, City of Sunderland College, East Durham College, Bede Sixth Form College, Hartlepool College of Further Education or Hartlepool Sixth Form College) and will graduate there in the summer of 2026.
• Nationality: You are a student from the UK/domestic student paying domestic tuition fees.
• Field of study: Any topic is fine.
• Funding: You cover the costs yourself, without any financial support from your employer. You also apply for at least part of the state student finance package, such as a loan to cover tuition fees or a loan to cover living costs.
• Other awards: You have not yet received any other Bachelor’s prize. Should you win a prize of greater value, you will receive that one instead.

How to apply

No separate application is required. Northumbria will check who meets the eligibility criteria after you have enrolled, and anyone who meets the criteria will receive the scholarship automatically. If you applied for your degree programme before 14 January 2026, you must have listed Northumbria as your first choice by 30 June 2026.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is very narrowly defined: you must be a graduate of one of the six specifically named local universities, be starting your degree at Northumbria University in September 2026, and be paying the tuition fees for home students. As a result, the pool of eligible candidates is small, and there is no competition for the places. If you clearly meet the criteria, you will receive the funding automatically, so your prospects couldn’t be better.
