About this scholarship
ASEA-UNINET clinical elective grant (Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam)
You will receive a grant for an elective clinical placement (Famulatur, a short placement in a hospital) at a partner medical university in Thailand, Indonesia or Vietnam. This takes place in July, August or September. The amount of the grant depends on the duration of your stay: 1,000 EUR for 4 weeks, 1,500 EUR for 6 weeks or 2,000 EUR for 8 weeks. The host university does not charge any tuition fees, and the placement will count as an elective clinical placement within your medical degree at MedUni Vienna. You are responsible for your own travel costs. If you are going to the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam), there is an additional fee of approximately 400 USD. Payment will be made after your return, once you have submitted a short report and proof of your stay. The programme is run by MedUni Vienna and funded by the Austrian OeAD on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Science, in collaboration with the ASEA-UNINET network.
Who can apply
- Your university: You are studying medicine (Diploma programme) at the Medical University of Vienna.
- Study progress: You are at least in your 3rd year (5th semester) and have passed the SIP 1 exam.
- Courses done: You have completed the modules ‘Medical Communication A’, ‘Basic Medical Skills’, ‘Physical Examination’ and ‘Introductory Clinical Placement’.
- Prior clinical practice: You have already completed at least one other clinical placement and can provide evidence of this.
- English: Your English is very good.
- Motivation: You can demonstrate personal motivation and initiative.
How to apply
You apply through MedUni Vienna's Mobility-Online portal. For an elective the following summer, the application window runs in early November and closes on 19 November. Places are announced on 15 December. Applicants are ranked mainly by their weighted grade average, with social engagement and barriers to mobility also counting.
How realistic are your chances?
This scholarship is open exclusively to medical students at MedUni Vienna who have reached the 5th semester and have previously completed a clinical placement; the target group is therefore small. Selection depends mainly on your grade point average, so good academic performance is the decisive factor. If you clearly meet the entry requirements and apply within the November application window, your chances are good. Students who are unable to undertake a longer semester abroad will receive a small bonus in the ranking.
